I was trying to think of inventive ways to articulate the rock-til-ya-drop aesthetic of guitarist/songstress Joan Jett before I realized she is her own iconic fashion genre. (What are you doing tonight? I’m off to melt some faces in my Joan Jett pants.) New movie The Runaways chronicles her seminal punk band’s rise and demise, with sick ’70s wheels, rouge, and threads playing crucial supporting roles. We’ll focus on the latter.
This is the style you roll with when you’re hitting that dog-eared yet beloved rock joint. You could start with a graphic tee, but how about a less expected leather tank? Illia makes a dangerously cool wrinkled version (now on sale!) that pairs well with distressed grey jeans. A winged skull necklace by TOM BINNS feels like it was filched from a Sunset Strip dressing room, while Oliver Peoples’s blue-tint gradient aviators echo those worn by Kristen Stewart on-screen. Black and white Chuck Taylors are an effortless rocker classic, plain and simple, and What Goes Around Comes Around amps them up with copious pyramid studs. Multiple leather bracelets and cuffs comprise wrist candy worthy of a few fist pumps: try coupling the spiked studs of CC SKYE with METALSKIN snakeskin and the ultimate ode to girl power, the Rebecca Minkoff Double Zip Bracelet in hot pink.
