I’ve been wearing a pair of Michael Kors shoes around my house (snagged in the last Shopbop designer sale) in an effort to break them in for a wedding I’m attending next week. They’re the classic American fare you’d expect from Michael Kors—clean-lined, brilliantly executed—and when I’m wearing them, I can’t help but stare at my feet. It’s the hypnotizing power of a great pair of shoes, and fall’s avant-garde take on footwear offers a multitude of captivating options.

Sharp angles, sculpted heels, and unexpected shapes serve as a chic counterpart to the season’s return-to-the-classic apparel looks. Maison Martin Margiela, the house that defines innovation, has soft drapes and louche accents in the same collection—the former artfully elegant, the latter decidedly forward. In a slightly subtler nod to the avant-garde, Jil Sander puts timeless boot silhouettes atop chunky platforms and wedges, while Camilla Skovgaard roughs up feminine cutouts with zigzag lug soles. And it goes down the line: from Alexander Wang to Jeffrey Campbell, designers are serving up tempting alternatives to classic black pumps.
