The ladies of Rodarte destroyed the fabric that composed their pieces and built a post-apocalyptic world for their spring 2010 runway, and Balmain mixed military overtones with rips and shreds. Erin Wasson’s RVCA line embraced holes and tears, and Helmut Lang let its knits unravel. The point? Fashion’s coolest are coming undone.
“A downtown girl loves a ‘beat-up’ piece,” says Shopbop Fashion Director Kate Ciepluch. “It’s both tough and sexy, and a unique approach to showing a little skin.”
But how to wear this disheveled downtown look? I asked Shopbop’s best style source, Senior Stylist Morgan Wendelborn. “You don’t want this look to become too grunge, so style something shredded with something tailored, like a slouchy dress pant. Pair it with studded booties to keep the edge.”
