Biker gear has revved up the fashion world the last few seasons with designer motorcycle jackets and biker boots, but did you know you can now hang your quilted Chanel bag over the handlebars of your Chanel motorcycle while zipping through the streets wearing the ultimate hair accessory: a tweed (or mink or pearl-encrusted) Karl Lagerfeld-designed motorcycle helmet? Speechless.
All this leather-n-luxury reminded me of my all-time favorite fashion editorial featured in Vogue, September 1991: Wild at Heart. It was the glorious height of the Linda, Naomi, and Christy era, when the pages of the fashion glossies dripped with Versace decadence. Vogue managed to unite all the top supermodels for one iconic Grace Coddington-styled, Peter Lindbergh-photographed, Marlon Brando-woos-Coco Chanel shoot.
I’ve since been transfixed by tiers of pretty pearls and gilded chains played against rebel toughness. How to enrapture your own wild heart? Start with a simple black moto jacket paired with a white tank and a coquettish full skirt. For a one-of-a-kind color pop, snatch up a red vintage Chanel tassel bag and a cache of vintage Chanel necklaces. Then finish with a true road legend: Frye engineer boots.
