I’ve often wished they offered a remedial fashion course in the art of accessorizing. (My dream professors for said class? Patricia Field and Eric Daman.) Belts are especially baffling. I’m comfortable with no-brainer choices (see skinny black belt with Little Black Dress), but never attempt the kind of advanced cinching techniques—wide studded affairs over classic trench coats, for example—I admire in street style pics.
Are you similarly belt-challenged? Help has arrived in the form of new head-to-toe styled ensembles on our item detail pages. A little added inspirational/instructional bonus where you need it most, each outfit showcases the transformative power of the right waist-defining or hip-slung style. Good news for my credit card balance, these styling tips have made me consider how items currently languishing in my closet could benefit from the right B-Low the Belt.
For example: A knee-length vintage print dress that I’ve put on and dismissed as too Queen Mother too many times to count feels suddenly British It-girl with a studded Be & D belt, while a See by Chloé double-wrap belt makes jersey James Perse and Rachel Pally numbers look finished. I’ve never considered belting the grandpa cardigan I’ve been wearing all winter, but this image has me thinking a braided Motif 56 might be just what it needs to feel Sartorialist-worthy.
