lulu: You have always been a fashionable guy; when did you first realize you wanted to create your own clothing line?
Davey: Designing clothes is something that I have passively dreamt of since I was very young. I’ve always found myself looking at pieces on the racks and thinking, “this would be perfect if only…” but never thought I’d be given the chance to have my own line. After a few unrealized attempts with different partners, I’ve finally achieved more than ever before with just myself, my great talented friend Danny and one inspired, hopeful vision.
lulu: What influences the designs you create at Zu Boutique?
Davey: ZU is very self-indulgent and is directly inspired by all that I love in music, counter culture and art. We do everything from upside cross pendants, to graphic tees featuring a hot dog dancing in a pile of blood under a brightly lit sign that reads, “Murder.”
lulu: What is the design process like for a Zu Boutique tee? Which part is your favorite?
Davey: My involvement in the line is mainly conceptual. I’m constantly struck with ideas for new graphics, new pieces and new jewelry that I frantically spew to Danny. It’s truly uncanny how perfectly he can take my barrage of ideas and create from them exactly what I’d envisioned while adding elevating flourishes of his own that I’d have never thought of. He’s really a genius.
lulu: You have designed some rad, bedazzled shoes for Macbeth and some killer jewelry pieces, but are you planning to expand the Zu brand further?
Davey: Thank you. Yes, it is our dream to expand ZU into a full line. We’ve recently been discussing a new outerwear piece that we hope to have constructed by the end of the year. With just two of us, it’s a slow process of expansion, but we are committed.
lulu: How do your bands AFI and Blaqk Audio influence your style?
Davey: I wouldn’t say the bands influence my style in any way however having the occasional photo shoot or TV performance does provide me with excuses to go shopping.
lulu: What is your favorite fashion item?
Davey: Well, favorites always change but currently I have some Vue dc glasses that rarely leave my face. I couldn’t live without my Bourgeois Boheme Chelsea Boots and really have been into the black buttoned, raspberry blazer that I was elated to discover at Marc by Marc.
lulu: What was your inspiration for the exclusive shirt for YMI Jeans?
Davey: Danny and I were both wanting to do something bold, graphic and simplistic. I believe he looked to pinwheels for inspiration, whereas I was drawing from Bronze Age European imagery…and California Adventure at Disneyland.
lulu: What is it that you like about YMI Jeans?
Davey: They make your butt look fabulous!
lulu: Do you have any advice for young fashionistas and fashionistos out there?
Davey: Image is hollow. Show some style.
