During my undergrad years, my wardrobe was heavy on navy and brown—I never wore black. Over time, my tastes evolved to the other extreme, and today, my closet is an abyss of shadowy shades with the occasional shot of cream. But with the emergence of the Americana trend in spring collections from Brian Reyes to Prabal Gurung, I’ve found myself drawn once again to black’s softer counterpart, navy blue.

Done in stripes, the nautical shade has a summer-in-Cape Cod feel (so casual Jackie O.), and a navy blazer paired colorblock-style with a button-down, white jeans, and a red clutch is softly sophisticated, crisp, and clean. Even matched with black, navy breathes new life into a go-to look. I’ve started wearing a navy skirt with my favorite black turtleneck and brown knee-high boots—a grown-up take on my collegiate style.

But perhaps the most appealing part of this color trend is that it’s not a trend at all. Navy blue is timeless, as much a part of American fashion as denim, and when done in classic styles, can live in a wardrobe for years.
