Context is everything in fashion. Exhibit A: Seeing Sarah Jessica Parker with a bright pink handbag on her arm, via the “I Really Love My…” feature on People.com. (I really love IRLM because it shows that even if you have deep pockets and fashion designer friends gifting you gorgeous things all the time, only a few pieces will rise to the favorite-favorite, can’t-stop-wearing-it ranks. We ladies who work for our fashion just have to focus our resources on those pieces that make our hearts leap.)
Back to SJP. Owing to her well-honed (yet unstudied-seeming) sense of style and personality, she shows how a pink handbag, something that could easily veer into Elle Woods wannabe territory, can feel strong and chic. Not just fun, SJP’s pink is formidable.
This is how a fashion obsession begins. Now I’m madly hearting pink handbags from Rebecca Minkoff, Vanessa Bruno, and Kooba for further consideration, going to my closet and mentally picturing pink with my current wardrobe MVPs (sweatpants, black boyfriend blazer, heather grey Rag & Bone cardigan), and considering how coolly irreverent pink could be against all the khaki pieces I’m planning to incorporate for spring. Let’s face it: sometimes we all get tired of taking style so seriously. SJP’s bubble gum bag heralds a return to important fashion with a Girls Just Wanna Have Fun attitude. I’m all for it.
